Google's Material You
Back
At the 2021 Google I/O, Google announced that it would redesign all of its products. This large-scale redesign of the entire product range was dubbed 'Material You': a 'radical new way of thinking'. Google wanted, and wants to make technology simple and beautiful for everyone and provide experiences that also evoke emotions. So Material You has to give the Google products a more human approach and more flexibility. Material You must make apps personal, accessible and adaptable for every kind of screen.
For example, users on desktops can generate a unique set of images and colors for everyone and apps - not just those from Google - are adapted in real time to the wishes and mood of the user.
Material You makes it easy to adapt the design to different screen sizes and types, taking into account the environment. It also ensures that screens are easier to read for the visually impaired.
Status April 2023
We are now two years later and most of Google's apps have been rebuilt according to the new design guidelines. But there are still apps that have the old design, such as the Google app on Android; the search engine is the main app that is yet to be updated. At the end of January, it seemed that the design had been adjusted, but this was later reversed.
Other apps that could be modernized in the near future are the Authenticator, Google Cloud and Google Analytics.
