New applications of AI in Maps
Back
The well-known Google Maps will also use AI. For example, AI is used to enable 'Immersive view' and 'Live view'. You can read more about it in this article.
'Immersive view' should give you the feeling that you are really in a place. This view combines Street View and aerial photos and adds useful information such as weather, traffic and how busy the area is. Suppose you are planning a visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. You can then virtually hover over the building and see where the entrances are, for example. With the time slider you can see what the building and its surroundings look like at different times of the day and what the weather will be like. If you're looking for restaurants in the area, you can descend to street level and you can even take a look inside to experience the atmosphere of a restaurant. AI technology is used to convert ordinary images into 3D views.
Immersive view is already being rolled out for London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. In the coming months it will be available for other cities, including Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice.
Explore and navigate with AR
Live View uses AI and augmented reality (AR) to find ATMs, restaurants, parks and stations. You just have to lift your phone while you are on the street. You can immediately see all kinds of useful information, such as when something is open, whether it is currently busy and how the rating is. Live View is available for London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo, and in the coming months for Barcelona, Dublin and Madrid.
Augmented reality can also be useful for navigating tricky places, such as an unfamiliar airport. In 2021, Live View has already become available in the US, Zurich and Tokyo to show you the way to the nearest restrooms, lounges, taxi ranks, car rentals and more.
In the coming months, indoor Live View will be expanded to more than 1,000 new airports, train stations and shopping centers in Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Melbourne, Paris, Prague, São Paulo, Singapore, Sydney and Taipei.
