Susan Wojcicki leaves Google. She once rented out the garage in which Sergey Brin and Larry Page started their business and decided a year later, in 1999, to join the new company that wanted to conquer the world with its search engine. She became Google's sixteenth employee.
She was at the helm of YouTube for nine years. Because of her role and influence, she is considered one of the most powerful women in the world of tech. Wojcicki will now take on an advisory role at Google and parent company Alphabet and will focus on her family, health and personal projects in the future.
Growth and criticism
Under her leadership, YouTube, which was bought by Google in 2006, grew from more than 1 billion users to 2.6 billion. Last year, YouTube accounted for 10 percent of Google's total revenue.
During Wojciki's tenure as head of YouTube, the video site faced increasing competition, especially from TikTok, as well as harsh criticism of YouTube's role in spreading disinformation and extremist opinions.
Susan Wojcicki is succeeded by Neal Mohan, who is now responsible for the development of the video site and the day-to-day management of the video and advertising division at Google.
