What can we expect from Google in the new year?
Back
Economic uncertainty
In 2022, big tech companies faced rising costs and falling revenues as advertisers and consumers tightened their purse strings. Meta, Twitter, Snapchat and Microsoft have already had to lay off thousands of employees in the past year as a result. Google seems to be getting off the hook for now, but this year it will face fierce competition from ChatGPT. This app immediately provides extensive answers to questions, whereas Google only references pages where the user can find the answer himself. Code red has already been declared internally, but we know that Google has made significant progress with Artificial Intelligence (AI) but needs to consider it more reliable.
This year will show whether ChatGPT will become the Google killer or whether Google will have the correct answer ready in its tool that applies AI to answer search questions.
Stricter regulation
Increasingly, big tech companies are facing watchdogs demanding more oversight and stricter regulation. For example, the United Kingdom and the European Union have investigated the app stores of Google and Apple to see whether they promote their products over those of others.
Mergers and acquisitions are also being viewed more and more critically; in early 2023, a decision will be made on the purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft.
A final threat is developer dissatisfaction with the fee that app stores charge for including an app. Elon Musk, not the least, leads them.
In short, the new year offers plenty of challenges for Google. We will follow developments closely on this website.
